In folklore, “Royal Virgin” (Crinum latifolium L.) is used to treat many diseases such as benign tumor and malignant tumors (cancer). To have a scientific basis for the demonstration of Crinum latifolium L.’s therapeutic effect, more than 15 years of research, the scientific work of Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram – Director of Thien Duoc Co., Ltd and her colleagues have achieved many results. Recently, the Ministry of Health has included Crila in the list of traditional medicines mainly used in Vietnamese health care facilities (Circular 12/2010/TT-BYT) and also recognized as one of three medicinal products in Vietnam which are invested for research, development, and large-scale production.

Crila is manufactured at the GMP-WHO factory of Thien Duoc Co., Ltd as recommended by the World Health Organization (QĐ 138/QĐ-QLD issued on May 27, 2010) from 30-ha plantation of Crinum latifolium L. under GAP criteria in Dong Nai, Binh Duong and Tuy Hoa (Phu Yen). The research succeeded in extracting alkaloid and flavonoid fractions from Crinum latifolium L. leaves, which can inhibit cancer cells, stimulate immune system and enhance hematopoiesis through testing in vitro and in vivo. Since 2002, the Ministry of Health has allowed Crila to experience clinical trials under Regulation 371 of the Ministry of Health on thousands of patients with prostatic fibroids (benign prostatic hyperplasia) and uterine fibroids at VN National Institute of Gerontology, National Hospital of Traditional Medicine, HCM Hospital of Traditional Medicine, National Material Hospital, and Tu Du Hospital.

In our conversation, Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram - Director of Thien Duoc Co., Ltd confided about her life – her research process, especially Crila’s treatment result and the ability to support cancer treatment and some other tumor diseases of supplements such as Crilin and Crinum latifolium L. teabag formulated from Vietnamese Crinum latifolium L.

Crila for fibroid treatment

In August 2005, after nearly 15 years of research, her medicine was officially approved by the Ministry of Health for nationwide circulation. Through clinical trials, Crila’s treatment efficacy for BPH was proven at 89.18%. Dr. Pham Thanh Ky - Chairman of the Council of Sciences said, “The research has high practicability, consistent with the current situation because fibroids are common diseases. The research results have made the safe treatment regimens from domestic pharmaceutical sources…”. Prof. Dr. Tran Duc Tho, Former Director of National Institute of Gerontology, Association of Endocrinology and Diabetes in Vietnam shared 50% of men over 50 suffer from BPH. Normally, urine is released when bladder contains 300ml, but enlarged prostate blocking bladder causes frequent, or low, difficult urination, or stuck urination. Using Crila is one of the medical treatments for prostatic fibroids. Evaluating the effect of Crila on patients by comparing results before and after treatment with index of weight, residual urine volume, and quality of life showed that good result in clinical trials at VN national Institute of Gerontology after treatment with Crila was at 89.18%. Prof. Dr. Tran Duc Tho added this was very good result, it was rare to have medicine tested with such a successful results.

As if to prove the real effect of Crila, Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram brought us letters of thanks from many patients, especially a letter of Harry Arakaki (72 years old) in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA. He thanked Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram for her excellent research about Crila because it solved his prostatic problems and improved his health, happiness and life quality. He said that his health fell down due to 45 years of enduring BPH. He always felt hot and painful; his urinary problems were causing stress and disorder in sexual ability. He was treated with more than 100 medicines and supplements which cost too much money but still it was in vain. In November 2009, reading information about Crinum latifolium L. on International Journal of Medicine, he found some rays of hope and started trying Crila. After taking 8 capsules per day for 2 weeks, he got positive results. Then, after 4 weeks he could sleep, after 8 weeks his health backed to normal.

According to Prof. Dr. Nguyen Duc Vy, Deputy Chairman of Vietnamese Maternity Association, uterine fibroids is a very common disease in women between 35-49 and usually occurs in women with estrogen intensity. The main reason is that childbearing women take abortion or repeatedly have uterine infection. Currently, there are many treatment methods for uterine fibroids. National Maternity Hospital has tried using Crila since 2005. Each time, 500 patients with 2cm-6cm uterine fibroids are treated with Crila with very good result (79.5%). Women treated successfully with Crila like Mrs. N.T.K (47 years old) in Hanoi met Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram to say thanks. After 2 months treated with Crila, her uterine fibroid reduced from 6cm to less than 2 cm and gradually disappeared. Currently, she is taking Crinum latifolium L. teabag. In case of multiple uterine fibroids, patients can take 5 Crila capsules twice a day, after meals for the best result.

Surprising things from Crilin and Crinum latifolium L. teabag

According to the letter of Mr. Do The Bac (67 years old) to Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram, he lives in Lieu Trung hamlet, Lieu Xa commune, Yen My district, Hung Yen province. In 2010, he had brain tumor and was recommended to examine at Bach Mai Hospital. After a week of pathological examination and determination, doctors consulted and decided that he had to undergo surgery to remove his tumor because it was quite big and grew fast. If not having surgery, it would cause him to hemiplegia and threaten to his life. At that time, he was paralyzed on left side, he could not move or walk. The tumor pressing on optic nerve caused him not to see things clearly 4-5 times a day, 30-40 minutes each time. At that time, he seemed to fall into decay, his health declined quickly. Because of weak health condition, he decided not to have surgery. Everything seemed hopeless until he was told to take Crilin from a drugstore of Thien Duoc Company at Phuong Mai Street - Hoang Mai district - Hanoi city. He started to take medicine as indicated, after two weeks, he could eat more, and his complexion could recover. He could feel hungry again. Seeing the efficacy, he continued taking Crilin and felt his health better and better. After taking Crilin continuously for over 5 months, he was not paralyzed anymore. Now, his health recovers back to normal, the tumor is gradually smaller and smaller. He still uses Crilin daily; without hemiplegia status, he can walk and see things as normal. He eats better and sleeps sounder.

Crila is the first herbal medicine in the world for the treatment of uterine fibroids in women. Crila is the result of four ministry-level scientific research subjects and two national-level pilot production projects.

In 2010, Crila has been exported to several countries including American market.

Before ending the conversation, Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram also recommended patients, “When patients want to use products from Crinum latifolium L., they should buy products from Crinum latifolium L. already on the market, not seek for Crinum latifolium L. plant because it is impossible to distinguish Crinum latifolium L. from others by appearance but by genetic test. The misusing of other Crinum plants will affect people’s health”. Crila, Crilin and Crinum latifolium L. teabag are widely circulated in hospitals and pharmacies in Vietnam. Patients can contact at:
